We found this tree growing on its side in a Myristica Swamp forest in the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary. On its side was a crevice much like the sages of old used to meditate on live and the universe. How old would this particular tree be, I wondered. I’m told they are over 250 years, perhaps older. They survive the human onslaught only because this grove is considered sacred. In the clearing just beyond is a field of paddy and arecanut plantations. These magnificent specimens remain standing – for now.
